FLORIDA CITY: Two individuals lost their lives in a collision involving a truck, a car, and a hotel sign in Florida City, resulting in the closure of U.S. 1 for several hours. Responding to the incident, Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue units arrived at the site near the entrance of a Quality Inn, located just north of Card Sound Road, early Saturday morning.
According to investigators, a Chevy pickup truck and a Honda sedan scraped against each other. A male witness stated that it appeared to be caused by a vehicle attempting a turn at high speed, possibly around 70 or 80 miles per hour, without sufficient time to stop. Surveillance footage captured the dark-colored truck racing down U.S. 1 and colliding with the Quality Inn sign, while the other car involved came to a halt on the right side of the frame.
The eyewitness described hearing a loud crash and witnessing the car veer onto the sidewalk, skid onto the grass, and then strike the pole of a nearby Denny’s restaurant. He rushed to the crash site and attempted to assist the victims in the aftermath. Sadly, the driver and passenger in the dark-colored truck were pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives have determined that excessive speed played a role in the accident.
He expressed his hope of providing aid, but he remains shaken by the incident. Later on, news cameras captured the damaged hotel sign. During the investigation, authorities closed the northbound section of U.S. 1, but it has since been reopened to traffic. The condition of the Honda’s driver remains unclear, as it is unknown whether they required hospitalization or were able to walk away from the collision.
Police are currently working to inform the next of kin of the deceased victims while continuing their investigation into the matter. (News source: 7News Miami)
