What is Joint Effusion?

Joint effusion concerns a condition that involves an excess fluid which accumulates in or around a certain joint. Joint effusion commonly occurs in the knees, elbows, and shoulders. When joint effusion occurs in the knee, it involves water or fluid on the knee.

What causes Joint Effusion?

There are two kinds of joint effusions which can be broken down into infectious (septic) or non-infectious (aseptic). An example of a septic joint effusion is known as septic arthritis whereas an aseptic joint effusion is commonly caused by personal injury.

When the joint effusion stems from bodily injury in the form of a wound, such as a unattended to laceration, deep cut, or medical procedure such as surgery, there will be swelling accompanied by redness and pain.
