Deadly Crash on SR-60
Two people were killed and four others injured in a major accident that occurred on SR-60 in Polk County on Tuesday. The crash involved two vehicles, one of which was driven by a Bartow High School senior who was on her way to school. According to the sheriff’s office, a westbound SUV turned into her path while turning onto another road, causing the student’s pickup truck to collide with the side of the SUV. The crash resulted in four of the seven people riding in the SUV being ejected, two of whom landed on the road and two found in a nearby wooded area. The student and one other person were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital while five people were transported by ambulance to Lakeland Regional Health hospital. One person succumbed to their injuries, and a third may die as a result of theirs. The occupants of the SUV were construction workers who were carpooling to their job site. Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the crash to determine who was driving the SUV at the time of the accident. The Florida Department of Transportation plans to conduct “educational outreach” in the area regarding safety and make safety improvements based on a review of contributing factors.
