The Personal Injury Lawyers at the Perazzo Law Firm Share Insight on Common Accidents involving Strollers

Stroller accidents can unfortunately happen, and it’s important for parents and caregivers to be aware of the common risks and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their children. Here are some common stroller accidents to be mindful of:

  1. Tip-overs: Strollers can tip over if they are improperly balanced or overloaded. Hanging heavy bags on the handles or placing too much weight on one side of the stroller can lead to tipping. It’s crucial to distribute weight evenly and avoid hanging heavy items on the handles.
  2. Falls from elevated surfaces: Placing a stroller on an elevated surface, such as a table or countertop, can be dangerous. Children can easily fall out or tip the stroller over if left unattended. Always keep strollers on the ground when not in use and supervise your child while they’re in the stroller.
  3. Finger entrapment: Some strollers have gaps or spaces in the folding mechanisms or hinges that can pose a risk of finger entrapment. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep your child’s fingers away from these areas when opening or closing the stroller.
  4. Wheel hazards: Stroller wheels can sometimes get caught in uneven surfaces, causing sudden stops or flips. Be cautious while navigating over curbs, potholes, or rough terrains. Ensure that the wheels are in good condition and properly locked to prevent accidents.
  5. Strangulation hazards: Stroller straps and cords can pose a strangulation risk to children. Always secure your child with the stroller’s harness or seatbelt and avoid using cords or strings to attach toys or pacifiers to the stroller.
  6. Unattended rolling: Leaving a stroller unattended on an inclined surface, even for a short time, can result in the stroller rolling away. Always engage the stroller’s brakes and ensure it is secure before walking away from it.

To prevent these accidents, it’s essential to choose a stroller that meets safety standards and guidelines. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper assembly, use, and maintenance. Regularly inspect the stroller for any wear and tear and replace damaged parts promptly. Additionally, never leave your child unattended in a stroller, especially in risky situations or environments.

By being vigilant, taking necessary precautions, and practicing responsible stroller use, parents and caregivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and keep their children safe while out and about.
