SUV DRIVER INDENTIFIED AND CHARGED
A man named George Alvarez, aged 34, has been identified as the driver suspected of driving an SUV into a group of pedestrians waiting at a bus stop outside a migrant center in Brownsville, Texas on Sunday. The incident killed eight people and injured nearly a dozen others. Alvarez, who has a criminal record, has been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was previously charged with reckless driving. The incident occurred when Alvarez ran a red light and lost control of the SUV, which then hit the pedestrians. It is still unclear whether the incident was intentional. Alvarez allegedly tried to flee but was prevented by bystanders. The victims were all male migrants from Venezuela. Alvarez’s bond totals $3.6 million and officials are waiting for toxicology reports to determine if he was intoxicated. Recently, many migrants from Venezuela have been arriving in Brownsville, but it is unclear why. As of Thursday, out of the 6,000 migrants in Border Patrol custody in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, 4,000 were from Venezuela.
